STANLEY OUTSIDE AND LOVIN IT
I simply love seeing a new guest experience this place for the first time. Stanley had to endure a wing trim yesterday but the benefit came today. He got to go outside and spend the afternoon in one of the large enclosures. He was so content just sitting in the partial shade and taking in the sights. All the other birds went about their business eating and climbing around. Stanley just wanted to bask in the fresh air. When I went out to mist everyone with the hose, he got right into the program. He didn't quite know where the water was coming from, but he loved it.
Stanley Experiences Club Parrot
This is Stanley! He has spent a lot of his life as a warehouse mascot in San Francisco. The crew would come in and talk to him as they got ready to go out in the field. Then he would wait for them to return. He spent the nights there by himself.
And yet, he seems quite happy. He hasn't been around other birds so his stay here is an experience to say the least.
He had a fruit warehouse next to him for that time in his life and learned to eat fruits and nuts, only. I will attempt to interest him in other foods but he chowed down on apple and almonds the first day.
It's fascinating to see different birds from different backgrounds and how they react to this parrot crazy house!
TIEL TIME
Time for the tiels to get out and sit around. They certainly don't get a lot of exercise but they seem to enjoy just hanging out with each other.
Here you see Katie next to Sammy. She doesn't seem to have an interest in him "in that way" but he definitely keeps an eye on her!
Bubbus is also out and singing his heart out. He is a happy boy and is quite delightful to have around.
Two Macaws are a Handfull
Oro and Azul were back for a few days of nurturing care. They are getting older now. They are extremely active and some of their behaviors are getting sexual in nature. For instance, this photo of them feeding each other! They are a dynamic duo and bicker and quabble like a married couple. The two of them plot to figure things out. For instance, they were on the ropes and wanted to be on the bed...They got the ropes swinging wildly and then one of them lept to the bed with the other following soon after. What a team.
PJ Goes To Work
PJ got to go to work! Her mom works at a large hotel and PJ could join her for a few hours if she wore her new Flight Suit. Hmmm.
Before work, PJ and her mom stopped by for a wing/nail trim and a little help to get the new contraption on. Look at PJ admiring herself in the mirror! What a cutie.
Simon and Felix Happy Birds
Simon and Felix are here for a whole week! I am so glad to see them! I brought Simon up to my office/bedroom rope gym while I struggled with my tax prep and computer glitches. He keeps me calm. Felix waits patiently for her turn. I rotate the birds for safety reasons. Anyone who has had multiple birds out when they decide to all panic at once knows what that's like! I can appreciate each one separately and they don't get into mischief with each other. I feel they enjoy their own private time with me.
Sierra Is A Happy Bird
Just an update for Sierra's mom and dad who are serving our country. Sierra is doing great! She is now getting to go outside to the large cages because our Spring has sprung and it's very beautiful outside. She also gets plenty of attention and loves to play on the ropes and hop and sing while on my bed. She surely misses you as you do her but her stay here is going smoothly. Stay safe and take care.
PLAY DAY WITH THE PARROTS
Today was another play day with the birds. Shelley, Christine, Sherry and I had a wonderful day enjoying lunch, making toys, and interacting with the birds. Ben even got to come out and sit near Shelley to observe the goings on. In this photo, he was making kissing sounds to show Shelley just how much he appreciated her bringing him over. Bintel, a very active and vocal little Goffins cockatoo, insisted on being part of the action. Bintel suffers from ADD. He is hyperactive and cannot get enough attention. He was so happy to be included that he would leap onto the table full of toy making parts and jump and dance across the surface. We had some music playing and Bintel was the most spastic dancer! As Shelley held him, he would bounce and step and do an exorcist-like movement with his head that was hilarious! Bintel was definitely enjoying all the energy in the room.Bintel even jumped into Shelley's lap to "help" with the construction of a bird toy! He wanted to be involved in everything! What a guy! All the birds enjoyed the group activity but the greys got a little perturbed at the zany antics of the goofy Bintel. It's interesting to observe the different personalities of the group.
Greysie Grey & Relationships
Here is a photo of Greysie, a Congo grey that I placed in a new home.
It is not easy to interview and educate those that want to adopt a parrot. I try to portray the reality of these complicated beings.
What is difficult to relay is that the parrot as well as the people go through changes. Changes in moods, situations, and life phases.
Greysie's new dad was having difficulty with the relationship that developed between Greysie and his other half. Jealousy is just under the surface in most parrots. If a mate bond is created with a parrot...look out whomever comes between!
This is why I can't stress enough the healthy style relationship with a parrot. Teacher/Parent! It is so easy to become enamoured with cuddles and skritches and giving and receiving love. But when dealing with wild instincts, it is vital to not allow "that kind of bond" to get started.
Even the dog whisperer tells folks to maintain pack leadership. The dogs and the parrots feel better when someone is in charge and it's not them. The happy ending is that Greysie is going back to her original family. They're prepared to take her back and try again!
Creative Toy Creations
How about these toys! The top photo is a pile of our individual Cluster Flock toys. They are made using a wiffle ball strung with Polly Rope or hemp twine and lots and LOTS of goodies! When finished, we strung them on skewers to make larger toys. The Oasis will be getting them tomorrow! I can only imagine the delight these irresistible toys will bring to the many birds at The Oasis. The large Cluster Flock shown in the lower photo is for them to raffle off for fund raising. Lots of fun to get together and make toys.
