The Happy Couple

This is Eddie (background) and Erica (foreground).

They live quite happily enjoying the freedom to fly around their home at will. Erica was thought to be a male...Eric. But when Eddie was brought into the flock, Eric turned into Erica! It turned into love. They eventually began mating and shredding the books in the bookcase to create their love nest. This was not a safe option. A nestbox was provided to insure safety and security for the tiel family.

Now, Eddie stays all day in the box manipulating the eggs and incubating them. Erica comes out when I arrive to sit on my shoulder while I read out loud to her. She remains very tame and loving. Eddie comes out in the evening when Erica relieves him of his duties. He and Erica will raise their babies together, hopefully with great success. After that? Who knows.

Do I recommend this for all parrot owners? No! But in this situation, it was the best resolution to a pair that has freedom in the home. To avoid this, try to insure same-sex companion birds.

KERMIT GREENCHEEK CONURE

This is Kermit. He is enjoying some time out on the playgym in the "small bird room".

Kermit can be very territorial when in his cage but once he's out and about, he is a sweetie. I enjoy having Kermit here. He is active and full of fun.

OKAY OKAY, I GET IT

THIS IS ECHO!

He is a foundling and it looks like he has become a part of my flock. I posted "found ads" on CraigsList and in the newspaper. I posted fliers around the area where he was found...I notified the local veterinarians. It is incomprehensible that his owner couldn't find him.

He has been extremely vocal lately. I imagine that someone got frustrated with his continual "singing" and "set him free". He is quite tame and prefers sitting on my shoulder more than anything.

I named him Echo because of the continual vocalizations and in honor of the eaglet that was lost recently in British Columbia.

When I peek in on him during the noisiest times, I notice that he is down low on the branches and peering at himself in the stainless steel cup! The cups act like mirrors to this egomaniac!

I may have to find a different cage for this Casanova. One with opaque cups!

Echo is a charmer. He must be missed! But, until his owners are found, I will love him and care for him in all his glory.

MUNCHKIN LIVES UP TO HIS NAME

When I introduce Munch to visitors, they think he bites. With a name like Munch! Well Munch is short for Munchkin and he is a love. If anything, Munch should suggest how much he loves to eat his cooked grains. I have him solidly addicted to my Psittacine Cuisine! He readily accepts a ride on my hand up to his dish as soon as it is installed in his cage. No! He's not spoiled at all!

Your Help Is Needed To Save Some Parrots

Dear Friends of The Oasis...

The Oasis Sanctuary needs your help to get a few birds out of a horrific situation.

I am of the opinion that when a rescue is ongoing that only the people involved need to know where it is so that the birds don't "disappear"....Suffice to say that a BAD pet store back east has closed. I will be delighted to give you all more information once the birds have been moved to safety.

Most of the animals were purchased, but there are several former breeder birds, in poor condition apparently, as well as some small finches and budgies, who need to be ransomed. One bird is an older plucked Macaw, another is a frightened former-breeder Grey. The remaining cockatoo had her buddy sold....She is terrified and alone!

If The Oasis can raise the funds, we will accept these birds. We will get them the medical care they will need and insure that their lives will be far better than they have been so far!!

We have raised some funds, but need to raise another $2K to ransom the all birds. We have a promise of $500 toward the Veterinary expenses and also need to raise funds for transportation.

Every little bit will help. Please go to http://www.the-oasis.org/donatenow.php
If you can use the Google button, we receive 100% of the donation and do not have to pay a fee....

Please notify me if you go on line and make a donation. That way I can tally the amount and make sure it is appropriately used to help these poor animals.

Thank you in advance for your kindness and your help bringing these birds to safety!!!

Sybil

EDIBLE FLOWERS AND BRANCHES

Here is Lucy enjoying a freshly picked geranium. I try to provide safe branches and flowers for the birds to chew on and eat. Sometimes they just want to tear them apart. Whatever!

The Internet has a very long list of safe branches and plants, but be sure to learn what is what. For instance, honeysuckle flowers are safe and sweet but the vine is toxic. Also, you should know if it has been sprayed with any toxic substance.

I use willow branches, bamboo shoots, ash tree limbs, and citrus limbs. I feed geraniums, nasturtiums, rosemary, zinnias, and squash blossoms.

Maybe your garden has some delectable enrichments.

Purely Parrot Dice

It's a beautiful day here and I have the birds outside enjoying this sunshine.I am fortunate to have many large outdoor cages for days like this.
Most parrots enjoy the shade, not the sun. Here is Odie, an umbrella cockatoo, who sits quite happily observing nature.
Smeagol, however, seems to prefer the sunshine! He spent a long time sunning and then moved over to the shady area.
Of course, they all enjoyed a good misting from the hose! Look at Molly...she can't get wet enough!

SMEAGOL SETTLING IN

This is Smeagol watching his parents get him settled in for a stay with me. Smeagol is an only child and he is not quite sure what to make of all the other parrots. His mom and dad brought his favorite things and stayed long enough to insure his comfortability.
He has since gotten into the swing of things and seems very calm. He sets off his alarm call when I walk by with another parrot but I think that's his way of saying "hello".
Smeagol is eating well and playing with his toys. Today he came up to hang out with me in my "office."

Hello?

I can't seem to get an email to a cruise ship....so please know that your little girl is doing splendidly. We're having a heatwave and I have to go serve breakfast and give them all a spray shower to start their day! See you soon. Gayle

TEDDIE YELLOW SIDED GREENCHEEK CONURE

This is Teddie. She is a hyper-active little thing! She loves to get out and climb around while I serve breakfast and clean the cages in the small bird room. She always has lots to say and I am enjoying her very much.

I think she is absolutely beautiful with her red belly and yellow underwings. Greencheek conures are great companions and they tend to be less noisy than most. However, they need a big cage to supply ample room to play play play.

MANGO MEYERS GIRL

This is Mango! She is such a sweetie. Very talkative and playful. She does, however, like to shred her cage papers! Oh well, every bird needs a job and hers is to make a mess. Come to think of it, they all do that!
Mango is enjoying the hanging ropes in my room. She climbs from one end to the other! Lots of space to explore.

Georgia Pretty Girl

This is Georgia. She is a sweet little lutino cockatiel hen. She is spending some time here and the boys are soooo excited. They have been whistling up special tunes to woo her.

Georgia, on the other hand, is only interested in what food is to be had. When I have them all out on the playgym, she sneaks into their cage and nibbles in their food cups. The grass is always greener...

Georgia is having a swell vacation and is learning that she is a bird.
